Inferno! Volume 1 – Tales From the Worlds of Warhammer

Way back in 1997, issue 1 of Inferno! magazine was the first publication from a newly-created Black Library, featuring short stories, artwork and comic strips exploring the Warhammer settings. Fast forward to 2018 and Inferno! Volume 1 is the first in a new series of short story anthologies which promise to breathe new life into the Inferno! name. The eleven featured short stories cover Warhammer 40,000, Warhammer Age of Sigmar, Necromunda and even Warhammer Chronicles (tales from the Old World), and come from the keyboards of Black Library authors both old and new – including three never-before-seen stories from Black Library debutants (not to be confused with debutantes).

QUICK REVIEW: The Mutant Master – William King

One of several Gotrek & Felix short stories which were bundled together to form Trollslayer, the first in the LONG series of ‘nounslayer’ books, The Mutant Master was first published in issue one of Inferno! magazine all the way back in 1997. After having been waylaid by mutants on the route between Altdorf and Middenheim, Gotrek and Felix take their rest in an inn ominously called The Hanged Man. There they hear tell of an evil sorcerer who’s taken the locals’ children hostage, while talk of the sorcerer’s monster piques the doom-seeking slayer’s interest even further.

RAPID FIRE: Nick Kyme and Gav Thorpe Talk Masters of Stone and Steel

Welcome to this instalment of Rapid Fire, my ongoing series of quick interviews with Black Library authors talking about their new releases. These are short and sweet interviews, with the idea being that each author will answer (more or less) the same questions – by the end of each interview I hope you will have a good idea of what the new book (or audio drama) is about, what inspired it and why you might want to read or listen to it.

For this instalment I’ve spoken with not just one but two Black Library authors – Nick Kyme and Gav Thorpe – to get the lowdown on the latest Warhammer Chronicles omnibus, Masters of Stone and Steel. Read on to delve back into the earlier days of the Old World, and then don’t forget to go out and grab your copy of the book, as it’s available to order right now.

RAPID FIRE: Graham McNeill Talks The Legend of Sigmar

Welcome to this instalment of Rapid Fire, my ongoing series of quick interviews with Black Library authors talking about their new releases – or in this case, with The Legend of Sigmar, a slightly older release from the Warhammer Chronicles series. These are short and sweet interviews, with the idea being that each author will answer (more or less) the same questions – by the end of each interview I hope you will have a good idea of what the book (or audio drama) is about, what inspired it and why you might want to read or listen to it.

In this instalment I spoke to Graham McNeill about his legendary Warhammer series, The Legend of Sigmar, which is available as a single-volume omnibus in the Warhammer Chronicles series. In fact, this was the first of these old-school Warhammer series to get the new omnibus treatments! It’s available to order right now, and is a great place to start if you want to dig into the stories of the World that Was.

Wolf Riders – Edited by David Pringle

First published way back in the mists of time (well…1990), years before Black Library as a publisher existed, Wolf Riders is an anthology of short stories set in the Warhammer Old World, and is a little…different to more modern Warhammer stories. A little over 200 pages long, it contains eight stories from seven different authors, including familiar names like William King and Sandy Mitchell, and features fan-favourites Gotrek and Felix alongside a range of less well-known characters like halfling investigator Sam Warble and various assorted heroes and ne’er do wells, plus an appearance of the haunted castle Drachenfels.

RAPID FIRE: Oldhammer – Nathan Long Talks Ulrika the Vampire

Welcome to this instalment of Rapid Fire, my ongoing series of quick interviews with Black Library authors talking about their new releases. These are short and sweet interviews, with the idea being that each author will answer (more or less) the same questions – by the end of each interview I hope you will have a good idea of what the new book (or audio drama) is about, what inspired it and why you might want to read or listen to it.

In this instalment I spoke to Nathan Long about his old school Warhammer series, Ulrika the Vampire: The Omnibus, which is getting a long-awaited rerelease under the Warhammer Chronicles series. It’s available to order right now, for anyone who’s keen to spend some time in the Old World.

QUICK REVIEW: Bloodwalker – CL Werner

A tale of Malus Darkblade in the original Warhammer setting, CL Werner’s Bloodwalker was first published in volume two of the 2012 Black Library Weekender anthology before getting the standalone eshort treatment. Set somewhere between the events of the original Abnett/Lee stories and Werner’s own End Times novel Deathblade, it sees Malus and Spite making their way to Hag Graef only to be variously ambushed, betrayed and forced to battle a horrific daemon. Malus has powerful enemies, but some dangers are enough to force unusual alliances…at least temporarily.

Black Library Weekender – Coming Soon

At the recent Black Library Weekender, the final session included a rundown of some of the titles coming soon from Black Library. Editor Nick Kyme and audio producer Matt Renshaw talked us through a whole host of new books and audio dramas, some of which had covers and some didn’t – I’ve gathered everything together here, with photos where I have them and a few snippets of info for the titles without covers. Upcoming Black Library Titles (as of October 2017)

Every once in a while a whole bunch of information about upcoming Black Library books shows up online, sometimes just titles, other times along with synopses and covers. Quite a lot has showed up recently, so I thought it might be good to pull together everything I can find about these books. Of what I’ve included below, some have been kicking around online for a while so you might be familiar with those, but others have only just showed up.

Gav Thorpe Talks Twenty Years of Black Library – Part Two

In the first part of my interview with games developer, Black Library author and all round top guy Gav Thorpe we talked about his early career with Games Workshop and Black Library, and his first couple of stories in Inferno! magazine. In this second part we talk more about his ongoing work with Black Library, as well as a little bit about what he’s got coming up, and the realities of life as a freelance author.
