Hello and welcome to this instalment of my Where to Start With Black Library article series, where I’m offering suggestions for good entry points into BL’s various ranges, and attempting to demystify Warhammer fiction a little bit. Historically, Black Library hasn’t provided much in the way of guidance regarding its massive range of stories, so I was pleased to see a recent (at the time I’m writing this) Warhammer Community article offering suggestions for where to start with Age of Sigmar books exploring the Grand Alliance Order – the ‘good guys’ (ish) of the Mortal Realms. While I applaud the intentions of this article, I didn’t think it was very thorough, and I didn’t necessarily agree with all of its suggestions, so I’ve put together an article myself on the same topic.

QUICK REVIEW: The Garden of Mortal Delights – Robert Rath
Robert Rath makes an impressive Black Library debut with The Garden of Mortal Delights, an Age of Sigmar short story which manages to explore interesting angles on both Slaanesh worship and the mindset of the Sylvaneth. Branchwych Kurdwen has been held captive for a full season, serving the whims of Revish the Epicurean and tending to his pleasure garden. Grown bored of the more visceral excesses, Revish has turned to culinary pleasures to sate his desires, utilising Kurdwen’s talents to nurture his garden. As he increasingly relies upon her skills, however, the branchwych has plans of her own in motion.
QUICK REVIEW: The Resolute – Josh Reynolds
One of two Josh Reynolds short stories originally published in the Legends of the Age of Sigmar: Sylvaneth anthology, The Resolute is a story of both the sylvaneth and the Hallowed Knights. The reed-city of Gramin, long ago ravaged by the armies of Nurgle, is once more befouled by the presence of the Order of the Fly. Felyndael and his fellow tree-revenants hasten to recover the dormant seed-pods slumbering beneath the city, but such are the forces set against them that they are begrudgingly forced to accept the aid of Aetius Shield-born and his Stormcast Eternals.
QUICK REVIEW: Wrathspring – Gav Thorpe
One of five short stories first published in the Legends of the Age of Sigmar: Sylvaneth anthology, Gav Thorpe’s Wrathspring features Alarielle herself and sees the sylvaneth battling the forces of Chaos in the Jade Kingdoms of Ghyran. Led by Leafmaster Diraceth, the tree spirits of Clan Arleath defend their Glade against endless hordes of plague-ridden skaven, but the tide of pestilence is taking its toll on both the sylvaneth and the land itself. It takes Alarielle’s intervention to drive out the taint of the skaven, and set the sylvaneth on the path to reclaim their lands from Chaos.
QUICK REVIEW: Heartwood – Robbie MacNiven
Robbie MacNiven’s first Age of Sigmar short story, Heartwood is a tale of the sylvaneth exploring one branch (sorry) of their arboreal kingdom, and the role branchwyches play in their society. When Nellas the Harvester is wounded defending the Wyldwood from invading Rotbringers, she returns to the heart of her domain bearing with her the lifeseeds of fallen sylvaneth to be planted and born anew. The question remains, however, whether she also bears with her a taint that might yet spell doom for the Wyldwood and her household.
