RAPID FIRE: Chris Wraight Talks The Helwinter Gate

Welcome to this instalment of my Rapid Fire series of quick author interviews, in which I’m talking to Black Library author Chris Wraight about his new Warhammer 40,000 novel The Helwinter Gate. This long-awaited conclusion to the Járnhamar trilogy is out tomorrow in swanky ‘Mega Edition’ format, complete with all sorts of additional bits and pieces and an eye-watering price tag to patch – while the standard editions should (assuming past release schedules apply) come along in about six months time. RAPID FIRE: David Annandale Talks Saga of the Beast

Welcome to this instalment of Rapid Fire, my ongoing series of quick interviews with authors talking about their new releases. These are short and sweet interviews, with the idea being that each author will answer (more or less) the same questions – by the end of each interview I hope you will have a good idea of what the new book (or audio drama) is about, what inspired it and why you might want to read or listen to it.

This time around I spoke to Black Library author David Annandale about his new Warhammer 40,000 audio drama Saga of the Wolf, an epic four-hour-plus story featuring the legendary Ragnar Blackmane and Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka! Lukas the Trickster – Josh Reynolds

The Space Wolves are an enduringly popular Chapter, but Josh Reynolds’ novel Lukas the Trickster is slightly different to their usual stories. With Fenris in the grip of Helwinter and the Space Wolves isolated, the dark eldar corsair Duke Sliscus launches a daring raid from out of the webway in an attempt to stave off his crippling ennui. Banished from the Fang along with a pack of Blood Claws after a prank played on the Wolf Lord Kjarl Grimblood, Lukas pits his cunning against the sly Sliscus, defending Fenris and its people in his own inimitable way.

Ashes of Prospero – Gav Thorpe

The second novel in the burgeoning Space Marine Conquests series, Gav Thorpe’s Ashes of Prospero sees the Space Wolves stretched thin in the wake of the Cicatrix Maledictum and Magnus’ assault on Fenris. When a weary Njal Stormcaller finds the spirit of a dead Thousand Sons sorcerer lodged within his mind, the revenant reveals that Bulveye and remnants of the 13th Grand Company still fight on, trapped within the Portal Maze. Though loathe to trust the ghostly presence, the prospect of retrieving Bulveye is enough for Njal to risk venturing to Prospero with what few battle brothers he can find.

Wolfsbane – Guy Haley

Book 49 in the Horus Heresy series, Wolfsbane is a pretty-much-direct sequel to Vengeful Spirit and Wolf King, and also a lead-in to Weregeld from the Corax anthology. The Vlka Fenryka have returned to Terra, but are champing at the bit to take the fight to Horus. Sanguinius’ arrival in the Sol system prompts Leman Russ, against his brothers’ wishes, to take his battered and bloodied legion back to Fenris in an attempt to divine Horus’ weakness. Meanwhile in the Trisolian system, gateway to Beta-Garmon, a young and disruptive tech adept named Belisarius Cawl finds himself under unwelcome scrutiny from his superiors.

Warhammer 40,000 Legends Issue Seven – Blood of Asaheim by Chris Wraight

I’ve had a copy of Chris Wraight’s Blood of Asaheim on my shelf for a few years now, but until it was revealed as the seventh book in Hachette’s Warhammer 40,000 Legends Collection I had never got around to reading it. Having two copies on the shelf and STILL not reading it just seemed wrong, so I happily rectified the situation – you can find my review here, but suffice to say I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Blood of Asaheim – Chris Wraight

Originally published in 2013, Chris Wraight’s Blood of Asaheim sees him return to the Space Wolves after the excellent Battle of the Fang, this time set in the current 40k era. When the returning Ingvar, back after over fifty years serving with the Deathwatch, rejoins his old pack – Járnhamar – their sense of unity and identity is challenged. Under strength and weary, Járnhamar is sent to Ras Shakeh to prepare the way for a major assault, only to find the world under attack by the Death Guard, so instead stands to defend it alongside the stoic, but wary, SIsters of Battle.

Leman Russ: The Great Wolf – Chris Wraight (The Primarchs Book Two)

The second book in The Horus Heresy Primarchs series, Chris Wraight’s Leman Russ: The Great Wolf is, like David Annandale’s Guilliman novel, not an origin story. It does however deal with the origin of a key part of the Wolves’ background – their rivalry with the Dark Angels. During the Great Crusade, the VI Legion were tasked with the pacification of the Dulan empire, who refused compliance with the Imperium. In the final stages of the campaign Russ and his brother Lion El’Jonson famously came to blows, and now we get the story of why that happened…at least from Russ’ perspective.

QUICK REVIEW: A Trick of the Light – Josh Reynolds

The first new Black Library e-short of 2017, Josh Reynolds’ A Trick of the Light is his second story featuring Lukas the Trickster after the audio drama The Art of Provocation. This time we go right back to Lukas’ induction into the Space Wolves and another event that’s enshrined in his backstory – his battle with the doppelgangrel. Abandoned in the harsh wilderness of Fenris, Lukas must battle all manner of dangers if he’s to return to the Fang and become one of the Sky Warriors, not least this most lethal of predators. He has a score to settle first, however…
