RAPID FIRE: Robbie MacNiven Talks Scourge of Fate

Welcome to this instalment of Rapid Fire, my ongoing series of quick interviews with Black Library authors talking about their new releases. These are short and sweet interviews, with the idea being that each author will answer (more or less) the same questions – by the end of each interview I hope you will have a good idea of what the new book (or audio drama) is about, what inspired it and why you might want to read or listen to it.

In this instalment I spoke to Robbie MacNiven about his first ever Age of Sigmar novel, Scourge of Fate, which was released in ebook over Christmas but is now available in hardback as well. Bonus points go to Robbie for not just a vintage BL reference in his inspirations but also my favourite Warhammer-related pun for a long time!

Gods & Mortals – an Age of Sigmar anthology

In three and a half years the Age of Sigmar setting has grown from fairly humble beginnings into something wild and imaginative, with vast scope for storytelling and almost unlimited potential. In that time, alongside a couple of dozen novels we’ve seen a whole host of short stories published, some tying in with ongoing narratives and others standing alone. Over a whopping 400+ pages Gods & Mortals collects together eighteen short stories into an impressive anthology, eight of which are brand new while the other ten are drawn from those previously-published tales. Eighteen stories, nine authors, and lots to enjoy.

The Bone Desert – Robbie MacNiven

Following on from where David Guymer left off with Realmslayer, Robbie MacNiven’s novella The Bone Desert follows Gotrek Gurnisson and his reluctant companion Maleneth as they weather assassination attempts, the elements and each other’s company. Having learned of an inscription hinting at the location of Gotrek’s axe, the unlikely pair are travelling through the arid Bone Desert, heading for the distant city of the Eight Pillars. Despite Maleneth’s attempts to steer them towards an outpost of her Order, Gotrek single-mindedly sets his sights on the city, however it seems there are others who don’t want them to reach their goal.

Blood of Iax – Robbie MacNiven

Robbie MacNiven returns to the characters introduced in his short story A Brother’s Confession with the novel Blood of Iax, a Dark Imperium-era Ultramarines story featuring a Primaris-only strike force. Blood brothers Kastor and Polixis – Chaplain and Apothecary respectively – are part of Strike Force Fulminata, and are taking the fight to the invading orks on Ikara IX when the tide turns and Imperial forces hurriedly go on the defensive. The arrival of ork warlord Urgork changes everything, especially as his objectives go beyond simply finding the biggest scrap possible – the canny Urgork has a plan, and it involves Polixis.

QUICK REVIEW: Once a Stimm Queen – Robbie MacNiven

Robbie MacNiven’s Necromunda short story Once a Stimm Queen tackles the strained relationship between two rival gangs, with the added complication of the underhive’s black-clad Enforcers getting in the way of cooperation. Sy and Jennix are both juves in the Escher gang the Stimm Queens, out on a routine job running stimms for a Goliath gang when the Enforcers strike and Sy makes a risky break for safety. Years later, the Enforcers get involved once again in Stimm Queens business, only this time Jannix is older and wiser, and won’t go down without a fight.

The Primarchs Audio Dramas with Robbie MacNiven, Laurie Goulding and Ian St. Martin

If you’ve been following the 2017 Black Library Advent Calendar throughout December then you’ll probably already know that three of the twenty-four stories were audio dramas in the Horus Heresy Primarchs series. These three stories are the first audio dramas we’ve seen so far in the Primarchs series, and two of them offer the first contributions to the Heresy in any form by the authors in question.

QUICK REVIEW: A Brother’s Confession – Robbie MacNiven

A Brother’s Confession by Robbie MacNiven acts as a prequel short story to the forthcoming novel Blood of Iax and introduces the characters of Kastor and Polixis (geddit?), two Ultramarines Primaris Marines whose bond of brotherhood goes deeper than Chapter ties alone. Apothecary Polixis comes before Chaplain Kastor to make a confession, relating to his brother the tale of his last mission, and the sin he committed.

QUICK REVIEW: Stone and Iron – Robbie MacNiven

The first audio drama in the Horus Heresy Primarchs series, Robbie MacNiven’s Perturabo: Stone and Iron sees the Hammer of Olympia leading the inexperienced 33rd Grand Battalion of the Iron Warriors into battle. Fighting against greenskins in support of their Imperial Fists cousins, the Iron Warriors are under close scrutiny by their primarch even as they follow his orders. Though his officers seem leery of the VIIth Legion’s efforts, Perturabo sees an opportunity to impart an important lesson to his sons using the Fists as his example.
