40k Reading Order: Minka Lesk – Justin D. Hill

Hello and welcome to this 40k Reading Order article – there’s a whole range of these articles here on Track of Words, but for this one I’m focusing on Justin D. Hill’s fantastic Minka Lesk series of Cadian Shock Troops stories. Black Library’s Cadians range has grown a lot recently, and there are loads of options for where to start, but the Minka Lesk series is really the backbone of the whole range. At the time of writing there are eight stories in this series – four novels and four short stories (although I’m also going to mention a few additional short stories that subtly tie in with the Minka Lesk series) – and with Justin’s generous help I’ve put together a comprehensive list of the whole lot, based on their in-universe chronological order.

Spotlight On Justin Hill’s Original Fiction

You might be familiar with Justin Hill for his Black Library fiction (written as Justin D. Hill), but outside of the worlds of Warhammer he has a considerable backlog of original work too, all exploring various aspects of contemporary and historical fiction. His seven books cover all manner of periods and locations from 11th century England to 20th century Eritrea, and characters from Viking kings to Chinese poets. As part of an ongoing series of guest posts in which I invite authors onto the site to tell us about their original fiction, Justin is here to talk a little bit about each of his novels, what inspired each of them, and what went into their writing. The stories behind these books are fascinating, featuring rapid evacuations, overseas volunteering, meeting the descendents of royalty and more, so settle in to add some books to your TBR list!

Terminal Overkill – Justin D. Hill

Justin D. Hill’s Necromunda novel Terminal Overkill is a grim tale of survival and the search for revenge, which leans hard on the darker side of life in the underhive. The Wild Hydras of House Escher scraped a living controlling territory in the Dim Zone bordering the underhive, until the rise of brutal Goliath overlord Fettnir and the death of their leader, Red Tori. Escaping into the darkness of the underhive, Brielle – teenage daughter of Red Tori – must first learn to survive on her own, before clawing her way back to a position from where she might strike back against Fettnir and claim revenge for what he took from her.

Anthemas – Warhammer Horror Anthology

Black Library’s third Warhammer Horror short story anthology, Anthemas follows in the footsteps of Maledictions and Invocations not just in terms of the naming convention and visual design, but by offering up a compelling collection of low-key tales highlighting the strange, sinister fringes of the 40k and Age of Sigmar universes. Across fourteen stories from thirteen authors, all but two of which are published here for the first time, it’s an exploration of characters driven by fear and desperation, ordinary people just trying to survive in the midst of terrible, horrifying worlds. QUICK REVIEW: The Sanguinalia Day Massacre – Justin D. Hill

Justin D. Hill’s Necromunda short story The Sanguinalia Day Massacre tells a tale of greed, power and uprising in the underhive, a grimdark retelling of Spartacus with the violence and brutality turned up to 11. Pitboss Barras has everything in place for the big showdown, pitting Thrax’s crew of low-hive scummers against the pick of his prized Goliath fighters, but when things don’t go quite to plan a chain reaction is triggered that leads inexorably to rebellion. Cadian Honour – Justin D. Hill

Justin D. Hill’s Cadian Honour – a sequel to 2017’s Cadia Stands but interestingly billed by Black Library as ‘Book 1 of the Cadian series’ – is an action-packed story of what life is like for the Cadian Shock Troops in the Dark Imperium. Burdened by the loss of Cadia and the disapproval of other Imperial forces, the remnants of the Cadian 101st are posted to Potence, capital world of the Gallows Cluster. As Chaos forces make worrying inroads into the system and peace on Potence is threatened, what should be an easy posting turns into a desperate defence against enemies within and without.
