A standalone short story, available as an e-short or within the Servants of the Machine God anthology, Josh Reynolds’ The Zheng Cipher tells the tale of a maniple of Vanguard skitarii sent to save a vital artefact from destruction at the talons of a tyranid invasion. Alpha 6-Friest directs her troops in battle against the xenos hordes as they race to reach the last remaining Mechanicus outpost before it’s overwhelmed, putting their rad-soaked weapons and bodies to good use. Despite appalling odds, 6-Friest and her warriors drive relentlessly towards their goal, laying down their lives in the Omnissiah’s name.

RAPID FIRE: Josh Reynolds Talks Shadespire: The Mirrored City
Welcome to this instalment of Rapid Fire, my ongoing series of quick interviews with Black Library authors talking about their new releases. These are short and sweet interviews, with the idea being that each author will answer (more or less) the same questions – by the end of each interview I hope you will have a good idea of what the new book (or audio drama) is about, what inspired it and why you might want to read or listen to it.
In this instalment I spoke to the ever-prolific Josh Reynolds about his brand new novel Shadespire: The Mirrored City, which is available to order right now!
Soul Wars – Josh Reynolds
Josh Reynolds’ seventh (!) Age of Sigmar novel, Soul Wars sees the Mortal Realms take a darker turn, as the dead begin to rise in horrifying numbers all across the Realms. In the Realm of Shyish, the Free City of Glymmsforge is under the protection of the Anvils of the Heldenhammer, but as Nagash grows bolder Sigmar reinforces the city with warriors from the secretive Sacrosanct Chambers. For Lord Arcanum Balthus Arum, the deployment to Shyish is an opportunity to atone for a mistake, but even his prodigious powers are tested by the Nighthaunt hordes flocking to Glymmsforge.
Eight Lamentations: Spear of Shadows – Josh Reynolds
Josh Reynolds’ Eight Lamentations: Spear of Shadows is the first in a planned Age of Sigmar trilogy about the search for eight powerful weapons scattered across the Mortal Realms. In the city of Excelsis, the crippled god Grungni gathers together adventurers from different Realms to seek out one of the eight, the Spear of Shadows, before it falls into the wrong hands. Grungni isn’t the only power seeking the spear, however – the Khornate forgemasters who first forged the eight weapons compete against each other, while both Archaon and Neferata send their own champions even as the skaven of Clan Rictus join the hunt for it.
QUICK REVIEW: Ghosts of Demesnus – Josh Reynolds
Josh Reynolds’ Age of Sigmar short story Ghosts of Demesnus is a Hallowed Knights story following on from Plague Garden, but it’s a little different to the usual style. Instead of the grand sweep of battle this is much smaller scale, as Gardus travels alone to the city of Demesnus in the Realm of Ghyran, where he lived in his first life. Seeking insight into the changes wrought upon him since being Reforged, he searches out familiar sights and sounds, hoping to stir old memories. The connections he finds to his past life, however, are not quite what he expected.

QUICK REVIEW: The Resolute – Josh Reynolds
One of two Josh Reynolds short stories originally published in the Legends of the Age of Sigmar: Sylvaneth anthology, The Resolute is a story of both the sylvaneth and the Hallowed Knights. The reed-city of Gramin, long ago ravaged by the armies of Nurgle, is once more befouled by the presence of the Order of the Fly. Felyndael and his fellow tree-revenants hasten to recover the dormant seed-pods slumbering beneath the city, but such are the forces set against them that they are begrudgingly forced to accept the aid of Aetius Shield-born and his Stormcast Eternals.
Blackshields: The Red Fief – Josh Reynolds
Following on from the excellent Horus Heresy audio drama Blackshields: The False War, Josh Reynolds returns to ex-World Eater Endryd Haar in a second audio, Blackshields: The Red Fief. In the aftermath of his mission on Xana-Tisiphone, Haar is being courted by Malcador, who wants to make use of Endryd, or the weapons he recently acquired, as part of the loyalists’ defence against Horus. Wracked with indecision about whether to commit to the Sigillite’s goals, Haar leads his warriors in a raid on a World Eaters fief world to gather supplies and hopefully recruit an old ally to his cause.

Hammerhal – Josh Reynolds
Josh Reynolds’ Age of Sigmar novella Hammerhal is a surprisingly ambitious tale filled with action, adventure, faith and dark magic. Spanning the Realms of Ghyran and Aqshy, the twin cities of Hammerhal Ghyra and Hammerhal Aqsha are protected by powerful wards – but a darkness nevertheless grows within their walls, and in the dark Hexwood of the Nevergreen Mountains in Ghyran the beastkin gather. While Lord-Celestant Gardus Steel-Soul lends the Hallowed Knights’ strength to the sylvaneth against the tzaangor beastkin, knight of the Order of Azyr Sol Gage leads his comrades in excising the darkness that lurks within Hammerhal.
