QUICK REVIEW: Elizabeth on the Island – Josh Reynolds

First published in 2011 anthology Candle in the Attic Window, Josh Reynolds’ short story Elizabeth on the Island is a haunting gothic tale of rain-lashed rocks, troubled memory and inhuman strength. On an unnamed island in an unnamed sea, a lone woman ekes out a harsh existence hunting rats for food and with only the remnants of someone else’s life for company. When her troubled solitude is interrupted by a new presence on the island, the woman who calls herself Elizabeth, who emerged bleeding and bedraggled from the sea into this strange life, must face up to her fear of the unknown.

Wrath of N’Kai – Josh Reynolds

Aconyte Books’ exploration of the world of Arkham Horror begins in fine style with Josh Reynolds’ Wrath of N’Kai, an entertainingly dark tale of a gentlewoman thief getting more than she bargained for. Countess Alessandra Zorzi has been commissioned to travel to Arkham, where a recently-discovered ancient American mummy is to be displayed, and steal it. What sounds like a relatively simple job, however, is complicated by the presence of an investigator from the insurance company underwriting the exhibition, and the dawning realisation that there’s more going on than meets the eye in both Arkham’s criminal underworld and its wealthy upper class.

Casefiles of the Royal Occultist: Monmouth’s Giants – Josh Reynolds

Josh Reynolds’ Monmouth’s Giants, a Casefiles of the Royal Occultist anthology from 18th Wall Productions, collects together 13 tales of monsters, magic, occult history and stoic British nerve. In 1920s London the position of Royal Occultist, a sort-of-policeman tasked with investigating occult crimes and mysterious goings-on, is held by the impeccably dressed if slightly bumbling Charles St. Cyprian, with the valuable help of apprentice/assistant (depending who you ask) Ebe Gallowglass. Over the course of these stories the pair battle all manner of mysterious creatures and disreputable characters, getting by on bravery, ancient knowledge, a stiff upper lip and just a little bit of luck.

With Kal Jerico: Sinner’s Bounty, Josh Reynolds takes the reins from Gordon Rennie and Will McDermott and reintroduces the suave bounty hunter for a new generation of Necromunda fans. Accompanied by put-upon partner Scabbs and sort-of-but-not-really wife Yolanda, Jerico is on the trail of Desolation Zoon, a Redemptionist zealot whose bold behaviour has roused the ire of the Guilders. With every other venator worth the name on the same trail, however, they must keep ahead of the competition and survive the many and varied dangers of the underhive – including a worrying number of muties on the move – if they’re to claim this bounty.

QUICK REVIEW: The Iron Promise – Josh Reynolds

Josh Reynolds’ short story The Iron Promise, available from Black Library either as a standalone e-short or within the Warcry anthology, is a tale of twisted honour, oaths and bloodshed in the Age of Sigmar. Vos Stalis, Dominar of the Iron Golems, has been tasked with a dangerous mission, leading a small warband into the Bloodwind Spoil to assess the loyalty of a duardin forgemaster whose tithe to the Iron Golems has dried up. A test of his strength and loyalty as much as the forgemaster’s, it sees Vos venture deep into the forge and confront the danger that lurks within.

QUICK REVIEW: Bonegrinder – Josh Reynolds

A sequel to 2018’s Death’s Head, Josh Reynolds’ Necromunda short story Bonegrinder continues to follow the exploits of smarter-than-the-usual Goliath ganger Topek Greel. Now a full member of the Steelgate Kings under the watchful leadership of Irontooth Korg, Greel is a dangerous combination of brawn, brains and ambition, and he’s got his sights set on consolidating his position through the manipulation of the Kings’ rival gangs. When Korg brings him along as a second in a parlay with an opposing gang leader, however, it begins to look as though Greel’s ambition might have got the better of him.

Blackshields: The Broken Chain by Josh Reynolds

The third in Josh Reynolds’ series of Horus Heresy audio dramas featuring ex-World Eater Endryd Haar, Blackshields: The Broken Chain sees Haar and his second in command – former Death Guard Erud Vahn – at the mercy of the Sons of Horus sent by the Warmaster to track them down. Betrayed, imprisoned and stripped of his weapons and armour, Haar languishes in chains while Vahn bargains with their captors, but the Sons of Horus want more than just prisoners. The Warmaster wants his weapons back, but the Blackshields’ loyalties and objectives remain unclear, while Haar knows he’s escaped from worse prisons in the past.

Apocalypse – Josh Reynolds

Part of Black Library’s Space Marine Conquests series, Josh Reynolds’ Apocalypse is the first in the range to not focus on a single specific Chapter of Space Marines. Instead, it features a mixed Imperial force defending an isolated system against Word Bearers intent on conquest. As Amatnim Ur-Nabas Lash leads his fractious forces towards the Ecclesiarchy world of Almace, Lieutenant Calder of the Imperial Fists plans the loyalist defences with the aid of Suboden Khan of the White Scars and Raven Guard Lieutenant Karros. If he’s to succeed Calder knows he must play to his forces’ unique strengths but also get the most out of Almace’s Ecclesiarchy overlords.

RAPID FIRE: Josh Reynolds Talks Apocalypse

Welcome to this instalment of Rapid Fire, my ongoing series of quick interviews with Black Library authors talking about their new releases.
