RAPID FIRE: Gav Thorpe Talks Rise of the Ynnari: Wild Rider

Welcome to this instalment of Rapid Fire, my ongoing series of quick interviews with Black Library authors talking about their new releases. These are short and sweet interviews, with the idea being that each author will answer (more or less) the same questions – by the end of each interview I hope you will have a good idea of what the new book (or audio drama) is about, what inspired it and why you might want to read or listen to it.

In this instalment I spoke to Gav Thorpe about his latest 40k novel Wild Rider, the second in his Rise of the Ynnari series after the excellent Ghost Warrior, and which is available to order right now.

QUICK REVIEW: Sanguis Irae – Gav Thorpe

First published in 2014, Gav Thorpe’s Blood Angels short story Sanguis Irae acts as a companion piece to the novella Sin of Damnation, and is available either bundled with the novella or as a standalone e-short. It follows the exploits of Librarian Calistarius as, many years after the Sin of Damnation mission, he boards another space hulk and uses his powers to search for answers within the mind of a dying Blood Angel. What he finds there, amongst the fractured recollections of Sanguinius brought on by the Black Rage, shows him the grave danger he and his brothers are in.

Sin of Damnation – Gav Thorpe

Gav Thorpe’s classic Space Hulk novella was first published in 2009 under the (ever so slightly misleading) title Space Hulk: The Novel, before being re-released in 2014 as Sin of Damnation, bundled with the short story Sanguis Irae. It’s the story of the Space Hulk game played through to its conclusion, detailing the Blood Angels 1st Company’s perilous mission to board the titular Space Hulk and cleanse it of the genestealer menace. Sergeants Lorenzo and Gideon lead their Terminator squads into battle in the claustrophobic confines of the Hulk, desperate to atone in alien blood for the shame of a six hundred year-old tragedy.

Rise of the Ynnari: Ghost Warrior – Gav Thorpe

Gav Thorpe’s Ghost Warrior is the first book in the Rise of the Ynnari series detailing the exploits of Yvraine and her Ynnari, whose goal is to bring forth the aeldari god of the dead, Ynnead. When the Iyandeni are confronted with the return of the long-lost craftworld Zaisusthra, spiritseer Iyanna Arienal’s path intersects with Yvraine’s. Iyanden needs allies to survive, while the Ynnari see an opportunity to find and claim the last of the once-lost Croneswords, which they need to bring about the awakening of Ynnead. The question is, what does Zaisuthra want, and why has it returned now?

RAPID FIRE: Nick Kyme and Gav Thorpe Talk Masters of Stone and Steel

Welcome to this instalment of Rapid Fire, my ongoing series of quick interviews with Black Library authors talking about their new releases. For this instalment I’ve spoken with not just one but two Black Library authors – Nick Kyme and Gav Thorpe – to get the lowdown on the latest Warhammer Chronicles omnibus, Masters of Stone and Steel. Read on to delve back into the earlier days of the Old World, and then don’t forget to go out and grab your copy of the book, as it’s available to order right now.

QUICK REVIEW: By Your Command – Gav Thorpe

A stylised but brilliantly effective short story, Gav Thorpe’s By Your Command ties into his novel Imperator: Wrath of the Omnissiah (it’s included in the special edition hardback) by virtue of its setting, but works very well as a standalone. Deep within the Imperator Titan Casus Belli, a maniple of Kastelan battle robots is awakened and tasked with defending the Titan against invading Heretic Astartes. Told from the perspective of the Kastelan Alpha-6-Terror, it’s a story which delves into the inner workings and thought processes of the robot even as the bolt shells are flying.

RAPID FIRE: Gav Thorpe Talks Imperator Wrath of the Omnissiah

Welcome to this instalment of Rapid Fire, my ongoing series of quick interviews with Black Library authors talking about their new releases. In this instalment I spoke to legendary Black Library author Gav Thorpe about his latest 40k novel, Imperator: Wrath of the Omnissiah. It’s an interview that’s notable for not just my favourite elevator pitch yet (you’ll see what I mean) but also for being the first time (I think) an author has used genderless pronouns in their answers. If that sounds weird, keep reading and it will all make sense.

QUICK REVIEW: Wrathspring – Gav Thorpe

One of five short stories first published in the Legends of the Age of Sigmar: Sylvaneth anthology, Gav Thorpe’s Wrathspring features Alarielle herself and sees the sylvaneth battling the forces of Chaos in the Jade Kingdoms of Ghyran. Led by Leafmaster Diraceth, the tree spirits of Clan Arleath defend their Glade against endless hordes of plague-ridden skaven, but the tide of pestilence is taking its toll on both the sylvaneth and the land itself. It takes Alarielle’s intervention to drive out the taint of the skaven, and set the sylvaneth on the path to reclaim their lands from Chaos.

Ashes of Prospero – Gav Thorpe

The second novel in the burgeoning Space Marine Conquests series, Gav Thorpe’s Ashes of Prospero sees the Space Wolves stretched thin in the wake of the Cicatrix Maledictum and Magnus’ assault on Fenris. When a weary Njal Stormcaller finds the spirit of a dead Thousand Sons sorcerer lodged within his mind, the revenant reveals that Bulveye and remnants of the 13th Grand Company still fight on, trapped within the Portal Maze. Though loathe to trust the ghostly presence, the prospect of retrieving Bulveye is enough for Njal to risk venturing to Prospero with what few battle brothers he can find.
