Hamilcar: Champion of the Gods – David Guymer

After appearing in various audio dramas and short stories, Hamilcar Bear-Eater – mightiest of Sigmar’s Stormcast Eternals (and modest, as ever) – gets his own novel in David Guymer’s Hamilcar: Champion of the Gods. Taking place in the Realm of Ghur, this sees the Astral Templars’ Lord Castellant boldly set out to drive the forces of Chaos from the region surrounding the ancient fortress known as the Seven Words. He soon realises that the real threat is actually from the skaven, and is forced to pit his strength – and his wits – against Ikrit, a worryingly powerful warlock engineer with designs on Sigmar’s secrets.

RAPID FIRE: David Guymer Talks Hamilcar: Champion of the Gods

Welcome to this instalment of Rapid Fire, my ongoing series of quick interviews with Black Library authors talking about their new releases. These are short and sweet interviews, with the idea being that each author will answer (more or less) the same questions – by the end of each interview I hope you will have a good idea of what the new book (or audio drama) is about, what inspired it and why you might want to read or listen to it.

In this instalment I spoke to David Guymer about Hamilcar: Champion of the Gods, his first Age of Sigmar novel and the first full-length adventure for the titular Hamilcar. Gods & Mortals – an Age of Sigmar anthology

In three and a half years the Age of Sigmar setting has grown from fairly humble beginnings into something wild and imaginative, with vast scope for storytelling and almost unlimited potential. In that time, alongside a couple of dozen novels we’ve seen a whole host of short stories published, some tying in with ongoing narratives and others standing alone. Over a whopping 400+ pages Gods & Mortals collects together eighteen short stories into an impressive anthology, eight of which are brand new while the other ten are drawn from those previously-published tales. QUICK REVIEW: The Palace of Memory – David Guymer

In a welcome return to the audio format for Hamilcar Bear-Eater, David Guymer’s The Palace of Memory sees the Lord Castellant of the Astral Templars venturing into Shadespire in search of secrets for Sigmar. Lost within the labyrinth of shadeglass, Hamilcar finds himself in the titular palace and confronted with ghosts of his past, facing obstacles even the mighty Bear-Eater can’t defeat with brute strength. Reliving moments of his life both before and after his reforging, Hamilcar is forced to consider that his faith in Sigmar might not be quite what he claims it to be.

QUICK REVIEW: One, Untended – David Guymer

A sequel of sorts to the epic audio drama Realmslayer, David Guymer’s short story One, Untended sees dwarf-out-of-time Gotrek Gurnisson embark on a perilous quest into the tunnels under Hammerhal Ghyra in search of a lost child. Despite being somewhat worse for wear after a heavy night, when Gotrek hears of a fearsome spirit said to haunt the catacombs he immediately joins the search alongside a party of humans, dragging Maleneth along for the ride. The aelf is none too keen to be accompanying Gotrek, but down amongst the darkness she sees an opportunity waiting to be grasped.

QUICK REVIEW: A Lesson in Iron – David Guymer

A Horus Heresy Primarchs story set during the Great Crusade, A Lesson in Iron sees David Guymer tackle his favoured Iron Hands and give their primarch Ferrus Manus a little more time in the spotlight. Pursuing the fleeing remnants of the greenskin Rust empire and determined to finish them off, Ferrus takes his flagship – the Fist of Iron – into a strange warp rift. Instead of orks waiting for them, the Iron Hands find an unknown Imperial ship which appears to belong to their legion. What they find upon boarding that ship appears impossible, though it hints at a strange future.

Dreadwing – David Guymer

The second of two Siege of Terra prequel novellas (see also Spear of Ultramar), David Guymer’s Dreadwing explores a little of what Lion El’Jonson and his Dark Angels were getting up to that prevented them from reaching Terra. Engaged in a campaign of harassment against Traitor-held worlds, tensions within the I Legion are rising as the question of whether to return to Terra becomes ever more important. While the Lion broods in silence, his lieutenants Redloss and Holguin – of the Dreadwing and Deathwing respectively – are at odds, one keen to continue the campaign and the other desperate to head for Terra.

After the fateful events of Slayer, and the death of the Old World, it looked for a while as though we’d seen the end of Gotrek and Felix. In David Guymer’s Realmslayer, however, Gotrek steps into the Age of Sigmar, doom unfulfilled, angrier than ever, missing his axe, and wondering what’s going on. Oh, and voiced by Brian Blessed too! Across a four-part audio drama Gotrek battles his way through Aqshy and Shyish in the dubious company of fyreslayers, a Khainite aelf, a necromancer and even a manling or two, searching for his place in this new world…and also Felix.

Gotrek & Felix: Slayer – David Guymer

The seventeenth Gotrek & Felix novel, David Guymer’s Slayer completes the two-part Doom of Gotrek Gurnisson arc within the wider Warhammer End Times series. Following on from the events of Kinslayer it sees Gotrek and Felix heading south with a ragtag force of men to try and reach Altdorf and Felix’s young family. In the way are whole armies of marauding northmen, while the shadowy presence of Be’lakor works to fulfil a prophecy and at last bring Gotrek’s doom down upon him. Despite their badly damaged friendship, the two adventurers fight side by side for what might be the last time.

For this slightly special instalment I spoke to David Guymer about his new Age of Sigmar audio drama box set, Realmslayer. This is a bit of a beast of a release, coming in at over 4 hours long, plus an extra disc of bonus material, not to mention featuring BRIAN BLESSED as Gotrek! To mark the occasion, David and I reached out on Twitter to gather a few extra questions on top of the usual ones.
