Welcome to this Track of Words Author Interview where today I’m talking to David Annandale about his upcoming Aconyte novel, The Harrowing of Doom! There have been a few Marvel prose novels already released by Aconyte, but this is the first in the Marvel: Untold range – “new tales of Marvel’s Super Heroes and villains”. It’s due out in ebook and as a US paperback on the 1st December, with the UK paperback following on the 7th January 2021.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW: David Annandale Talks Curse of Honor
Welcome to this Track of Words Author Interview, my ongoing series of quick interviews with authors talking about their new releases. These are short and sweet interviews, with the idea being that each author will answer (more or less) the same questions – by the end of each interview I hope you will have a good idea of what the new book (or audio drama) is about, what inspired it and why you might want to read or listen to it.
For this interview I spoke to David Annandale, whose new novel Curse of Honor is his first from Aconyte Books, and kicks off their new range of Legends of the Five Rings fiction. It’s published in the US (in paperback) and as an ebook on the 6th October, while the UK paperback is due out in November. If you fancy a bit of fantasy horror, and whether or not you’re already familiar with this particular setting, I can strongly recommend this great novel!
Continue readingWriting for Black Library – Pitching Warhammer Horror (Part One)
With the Black Library Open Submissions window themed around Warhammer Horror this year, I asked over a dozen fantastic authors for their thoughts on what makes a great horror short story, and their advice on writing and pitching a Warhammer Horror story to Black Library. I’ve already published the results of one conversation in my article Writing For Black Library – Alec Worley Talks Pitching Warhammer Horror, and I’ve gathered together the thoughts of the remaining authors to give you as broad a range of opinions, ideas and advice as possible to help you plan your submission this year. There’s way too much for just a single article, so I’ve split things into two parts, of which this is the first!
Curse of Honor – David Annandale
David Annandale’s novel Curse of Honor kicks off the new range of Legend of the Five Rings fiction from Aconyte Books with a sinister tale of duty, ambition, misplaced pride and monstrous darkness. Lieutenant Hida Haru is destined to one day become the daimyō of Striking Dawn Castle, but before then he has to somehow prove himself to his family, a task at which he has spectacularly failed thus far. When he stumbles upon a foreboding city hidden within the Twilight Mountains, he sees a chance to make a name for himself and strike a blow against the Shadowlands, but his ill-timed actions only lead to disaster. With cracks forming in the fragile alliances within Striking Dawn, and a horrifying evil unleashed upon the castle, its defenders must find a way to guard against terrible enemies both within and without.
RAPID FIRE: David Annandale Talks The Heretic Saint
Welcome to this instalment of Rapid Fire, my ongoing series of quick interviews with authors talking about their new releases. These are short and sweet interviews, with the idea being that each author will answer (more or less) the same questions – by the end of each interview I hope you will have a good idea of what the new book (or audio drama) is about, what inspired it and why you might want to read or listen to it.
In this instalment I spoke to Black Library author David Annandale about his new novel The Heretic Saint, which revisits a character who made her first Black Library appearance over 20 years ago – Ephrael Stern, the Daemonifuge. It was initially only available in a very nice but very expensive limited edition boxed set, before the ‘standard’ editions were published a few months down the line. If you’re interested in knowing more about this most unusual of Battle Sisters and her role in the new Warhammer 40,000 narrative, read on!
Anthemas – Warhammer Horror Anthology
Black Library’s third Warhammer Horror short story anthology, Anthemas follows in the footsteps of Maledictions and Invocations not just in terms of the naming convention and visual design, but by offering up a compelling collection of low-key tales highlighting the strange, sinister fringes of the 40k and Age of Sigmar universes. Across fourteen stories from thirteen authors, all but two of which are published here for the first time, it’s an exploration of characters driven by fear and desperation, ordinary people just trying to survive in the midst of terrible, horrifying worlds. These are stories to unsettle, that keep you wondering where they’re going and leave you feeling uncomfortable afterwards.
RAPID FIRE: David Annandale Talks Saga of the Beast
Welcome to this instalment of Rapid Fire, my ongoing series of quick interviews with authors talking about their new releases. These are short and sweet interviews, with the idea being that each author will answer (more or less) the same questions – by the end of each interview I hope you will have a good idea of what the new book (or audio drama) is about, what inspired it and why you might want to read or listen to it.
This time around I spoke to Black Library author David Annandale about his new Warhammer 40,000 audio drama Saga of the Wolf, an epic four-hour-plus story featuring the legendary Ragnar Blackmane and Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka! It’s available to order now either in MP3 or as a five-disc boxed set, so if you’ve ever wondered what a battle between Space Wolves and Orks would sound like…now’s your chance to find out!
QUICK REVIEW: The Revelation of the Word – David Annandale
David Annandale’s 25-minute Horus Heresy audio drama The Revelation of the Word features a great cast of Black Library audio stalwarts and tackles one of the most delicious ironies of the series. During his Shadow Crusade against Guilliman’s 500 Worlds, Lorgar Aurelian’s meditations are disturbed by one of his sons bringing word of a strange discovery. Travelling to its source, Lorgar finds an underground church and a congregation basing their forbidden worship of the Emperor on the Lectitio Divinitatus. Aurelian’s initial rage as his words are turned against him soon gives way to further scorn of his distant father’s followers.
The House of Night and Chain – David Annandale
David Annandale’s Warhammer Horror novel The House of Night and Chain is a bleak tale of trauma and the spiralling descent into paranoia and madness, a 40k haunted house story set far away from the big plotlines. Wounded, traumatised, widowed and grieving, Colonel Maeson Strock returns to the agri-world of Solus to take up the governorship, and the city of Valgaast to take up residence in his family’s ancestral seat, Malveil. Duty-bound to stamp out the growing corruption in the ruling council and determined to rebuild his fragmented family upon Solus, Maeson soon finds himself drawn into a sinister mystery with Malveil at its heart.
