QUICK REVIEW: The Zheng Cipher – Josh Reynolds
A standalone short story, available as an e-short or within the Servants of the Machine God anthology, Josh Reynolds’ The Zheng Cipher tells the tale of a maniple of Vanguard skitarii sent to save a vital artefact from destruction at the talons of a tyranid invasion. Alpha 6-Friest directs her troops in battle against the xenos hordes as they race to reach the last remaining Mechanicus outpost before it’s overwhelmed, putting their rad-soaked weapons and bodies to good use. Despite appalling odds, 6-Friest and her warriors drive relentlessly towards their goal, laying down their lives in the Omnissiah’s name.
Crusade – Andy Clark
Essentially an introductory story for readers new to Black Library’s Warhammer 40,000 fiction, Andy Clark’s Crusade is a straight-up action tale of Ultramarines taking on Death Guard in the still-new surroundings of the Dark Imperium. Forced into real space by a harrowing warp storm, Lieutenant Cassian’s strike force of Primaris Space Marines reach the Imperial world of Kalides Prime only to find it besieged by the Death Guard. Determined to rejoin the Indomitus Crusade, the Ultramarines aim to fight their way through the traitor lines to a vital Imperial emplacement and get word out about the plight of Kalides.
QUICK REVIEW: Extinction – Aaron Dembski-Bowden
After its initial publication in the limited-run Games Day Anthology 2012/13, Aaron Dembski-Bowden’s Extinction is finally available as a standalone e-short. Set shortly after the Heresy it sees the Sons of Horus scattered throughout the Eye of Terror, leaderless and embattled against the remnants of the other Traitor Legions. With Horus dead, his sons are the next best thing when it comes to finding someone to blame for the Heresy, so they bear the brunt of the other legions’ ire. QUICK REVIEW: The Lost King – Robbie MacNiven
Part one of another serialised Space Wolf novel, this time from Robbie MacNiven, The Lost King picks up the story where David Annandale left off in Curse of the Wulfen. While the immediate threat has been defeated, the embattled Wolves are still fighting on against the forces of Chaos across the entire Fenris system. With rumours circulating that Logan Grimnar has fallen, and an Imperial fleet led by the Dark Angels approaching in search of answers, the remaining Space Wolves are not out of danger. Something sinister is pulling strings from the shadows, but the players are not all out in the open yet.
