CL Werner’s fourth Age of Sigmar novel, The Tainted Heart is a tragic tale of two witch hunters – or agents of the Order of Azyr – bound together by conflicting ties of love, loyalty and faith. Amidst the crawling dunes of Droost in the Realm of Chamon, Esselt and Talorcan (previously seen in The Witch Takers) seek to stop an insidious cult of Nurgle from spreading any further. A tragic discovery drives Talorcan to pursue their mission with a personal sense of vengeance in mind, despite Esselt’s warnings, but it soon becomes clear that the pair’s pain is only just beginning.

RAPID FIRE: CL Werner Talks The Tainted Heart
Welcome to this instalment of Rapid Fire, my ongoing series of quick interviews with Black Library authors talking about their new releases. These are short and sweet interviews, with the idea being that each author will answer (more or less) the same questions – by the end of each interview I hope you will have a good idea of what the new book (or audio drama) is about, what inspired it and why you might want to read or listen to it.
In this instalment I spoke to veteran Black Library author CL Werner, about his new Age of Sigmar novel The Tainted Heart, which sees him return to the subject of witch hunters for which he formed quite a reputation in the Old World. The Tainted Heart is available to order right now!
QUICK REVIEW: Guns of the Black Eagle – CL Werner
A short Age of Sigmar audio drama, CL Werner’s Guns of the Black Eagle is twenty minutes of sheer fun as two Kharadon Overlords captains vie for honour and profits, holding fast to the letter – if not the spirit – of the Kharadron Code. The Black Eagle, under the captaincy of Grimgar Odriksson, is being pursued by the piratical sky-captain Skarskorr Halfbeard, but Grimgar is determined to keep control of the aether-gold filling his ship’s holds. As Endrinmaster Thorgrad looks on, Grimgar and Skarskorr engage in a battle of ships, crews and wits, with neither one prepared to back down.
Overlords of the Iron Dragon – CL Werner
Overlords of the Iron Dragon is CL Werner’s third Age of Sigmar novel, and the first to ever feature the Kharadron Overlords. Taking place mostly in the skies of Chamon, it follows sky-captain Brokrin Ullissonn and the crew of the Iron Dragon, a ship with a growing reputation for ill fortune. When they stumble upon the location of a strike of incredibly potent aether-gold, Brokrin’s lieutenants are desperate to go all in and claim a fortune that could spell the end of their troubles. Brokrin, however, remains cautious and suspects that it might just be too good to be true.
The Realmgate Wars: Lord of Undeath – CL Werner
CL Werner’s Lord of Undeath is the tenth and final Realmgate Wars book, concluding the series with another of the Stormcast’s missions to negotiate a new alliance with Nagash. This time the focus is on the Anvils of the Heldenhammer, led by Lord Celestant Makvar, who seek out Neferata as the first step on their mission in Shyish. The Mortarch of Blood has spent the Age of Chaos spinning veils of illusion to protect her city, Nulahmia, but the Slaaneshi warlord Lascilion threatens to undo all her efforts. If Makvar can ally with Neferata, it’s a step closer to success.
QUICK REVIEW: Bloodwalker – CL Werner
A tale of Malus Darkblade in the original Warhammer setting, CL Werner’s Bloodwalker was first published in volume two of the 2012 Black Library Weekender anthology before getting the standalone eshort treatment. Set somewhere between the events of the original Abnett/Lee stories and Werner’s own End Times novel Deathblade, it sees Malus and Spite making their way to Hag Graef only to be variously ambushed, betrayed and forced to battle a horrific daemon. Malus has powerful enemies, but some dangers are enough to force unusual alliances…at least temporarily.
QUICK REVIEW: Shiprats – CL Werner
A prequel to Overlords of the Iron Dragon, CL Werner’s Kharadron Overlords short story Shiprats sees Captain Brokrin Ullissonn and the crew of the Iron Dragon battling an infestation of rats that threatens their cargo and even – to their horror – their beer. Desperate for a solution for their rodent problem they seek the assistance of the Kheitar lamasery, where they hope the lamas (monks, not cute animals) will be persuaded to offer both their help and, because these are duardin we’re talking about, their goods to trade. When the lamas prove willing, something in their eagerness seems a little strange…
QUICK REVIEW: The Witch Takers – CL Werner
Evoking faint memories of his Mathias Thulmann: Witch Hunter series, CL Werner’s The Witch Takers takes place in the Realm of Chamon with two Sigmarite witch hunters on the trail of something monstrous…and Chaotic. When an ancient tomb is looted and a powerful artefact accidentally unleashed, triggering a series of grisly massacres, witch hunters Esselt and Talorcan hunt for survivors through the sands of Droost as they attempt to destroy whatever relic is causing such carnage. Though their order is feared rather than welcomed by the inhabitants of Droost, they may be the only hope of preventing further massacres.
RAPID FIRE: CL Werner Talks Overlords of the Iron Dragon

The Realmgate Wars: Wardens of the Everqueen – CL Werner
The fifth book in Black Library’s The Realmgate Wars series, Wardens of the Everqueen by CL Werner is the first actual novel, after four collections of novellas or short stories. Following on from Josh Reynolds’ novellas in War Storm and Ghal Maraz, this continues the story of the Hallowed Knights in the realm of Ghyran, as they fight to protect the Everqueen, Alarielle, from falling into the hands of Nurgle’s champion Torglug the Despised. Embarking on a long and perilous exodus from Ghyran alongside uneasy allies in the sylvaneth, the Hallowed Knights are plagued by Torglug’s forces at every turn.
