Anthemas – Warhammer Horror Anthology

Black Library’s third Warhammer Horror short story anthology, Anthemas follows in the footsteps of Maledictions and Invocations not just in terms of the naming convention and visual design, but by offering up a compelling collection of low-key tales highlighting the strange, sinister fringes of the 40k and Age of Sigmar universes. Across fourteen stories from thirteen authors, all but two of which are published here for the first time, it’s an exploration of characters driven by fear and desperation, ordinary people just trying to survive in the midst of terrible, horrifying worlds. These are stories to unsettle, that keep you wondering where they’re going and leave you feeling uncomfortable afterwards.

RAPID FIRE: CL Werner Talks Profit’s Ruin

Welcome to this instalment of Rapid Fire, my ongoing series of quick interviews with authors talking about their new releases. These are short and sweet interviews, with the idea being that each author will answer (more or less) the same questions – by the end of each interview I hope you will have a good idea of what the new book (or audio drama) is about, what inspired it and why you might want to read or listen to it.

This time around I spoke to Black Library author CL Werner about his latest Warhammer Age of Sigmar novel Profit’s Ruin, which is the sequel to the excellent Overlords of the Iron Dragon and (impressively) Clint’s sixth AoS novel. It’s available to order now in ebook and hardback, so without further ado let’s get straight to the questions and Clint’s answers…

QUICK REVIEW: The Fourfold Wound – Eric Gregory

Eric Gregory’s Age of Sigmar short story The Fourfold Wound is an ambitious, evocative exploration of the Mortal Realms, and a cautionary tale warning of the cost of seeking revenge. Across the Realms, Sigmar’s Stormcast Eternals are not universally loved, and discontented souls carefully watch and share their observations in secret. Shinua Gan travels the Realms sifting through the watchers’ notes for mention of a name, determined to track down the man responsible for the deaths of her family. Disgusted that he should be raised up as a hero by Sigmar, she’s determined to make him pay for his crime.

QUICK REVIEW: Beneath the Rust – Graeme Lyon

A prequel to Code of the Skies, Graeme Lyon’s Age of Sigmar short story Beneath the Rust looks back to the youthful exploits of Borri Kraglan and Harek Steelfist beneath the Rusted Wastes of Chamon. The Kharadron of Barak-Nar have entered into a business arrangement with the Stormcast Eternals of the Sigmarite Brotherhood, but the initial work on a Stormkeep has revealed tunnels running deep beneath the surface, which need exploring before work can continue. The Kharadron and Stormcast delve into the tunnels together, but what lies beneath the surface will test them sorely and come to define Borri’s and Harek’s future.

The Measure of Iron – Jamie Crisalli

Marking Jamie Crisalli’s first longer-form Black Library story (after a couple of short stories), The Measure of Iron is an action-packed Age of Sigmar novella exploring the Warcry setting. Dominar Syzek Govius of the Iron Golems leads his warband on a quest to find glory and honour, seeking out suitable components to forge a weapon fit for the Everchosen himself. More used to his old role as a forge-master than leading a warband, if Syzek is to succeed then he’ll have to survive not just the dangers of the Eightpoints and its inhabitants but also the attentions of his own warriors.

QUICK REVIEW: Skull Throne – Jake Ozga

Jake Ozga’s second Black Library short story, Skull Throne is a brave, hypnotic, intense Age of Sigmar story that could only exist as part of the Warhammer Horror imprint. In a silent, desolate part of Shyish, a young woman drifts through what’s left of her life in a distant haze, detached from the world around her and caught in a strange loop of indecision and what might be madness. When her routine is broken by a new presence that forces her to act, she feels something stir within that reawakens her mind and opens up a new path before her.

The Court of the Blind King – David Guymer

The Idoneth make their Black Library novel debut with David Guymer’s The Court of the Blind King, a tale of power, privilege and intrigue amongst the dysfunctional aelven families of the Deepkin. After the death of his mother, the spoiled and sheltered Prince Lurien naturally assumes that the throne of Briomdar will be his…right up until it’s taken from him. Escaping Briomdar with the unlikely assistance of a manipulative, ambitious namarti named Namaríel, he sets out in search of allies from distant enclaves, determined to take back what was his by right. To the isolated, suspicious Idoneth, however, Lurien is young and untested, and any offers of alliance come with steep prices.

QUICK REVIEW: The Age of Enlightenment – David Guymer

Picking up after the novel Champion of the Gods, David Guymer’s short story The Age of Enlightenment sees Hamilcar, no longer a Lord-Castellent, led to the Unchained Lands in Ghur by his Knight-Questor geas. Arriving at a strange, shrouded fortress besieged by the endless forces of Nagash, he begrudgingly joins the dour, gloomy Lord-Celestant Settrus and his Imperishables in its defence. Electing to search for its secrets rather than stand on the walls alongside its defenders, Hamilcar unearths an ancient and troubling mystery at the heart of the fortress, which he’s then forced to protect against a worryingly powerful enemy.

Disaster has struck the lodge, as its Runefather and eldest Runeson have been found murdered and Aruk-Grimnir’s legacy chest – the means for deciding succession – stolen. The Unbaki’s enemies are legion, but only a great power could have committed such a terrible crime. Alongside his remaining brothers and the elderly Battlesmith Firebrand, sixth and youngest Runeson Forn sets out to retrieve the chest, discover who is to become the new Runefather of the Unbak lodge, and take revenge for the dead.
