Guy Haley’s five-part Age of Sigmar serial At the Sign of the Brazen Claw comes to an end with The Hounds of Nagash, in which the tavern and those sheltering within it are assailed by implacable spectres. In the wake of Pludu Quasque’s revelation that his foolishness has incurred the wrath of Nagash, spectral glaivewraiths search for a way through the tavern’s magical defences. With the storm howling all around and a desperate fight for survival breaking out, the very structure of the tavern itself begins to come apart as the giant demigod upon which it’s built begins to wake.
After four instalments structured as stories being shared to pass the time, introducing characters and setting the stakes, this final part is a much more familiar Age of Sigmar tale, full of frantic action as the hunters close in. After previous stories exploring other realms, this is very much a tale of Shyish and the constant, looming presence of the God of Death, with all the excitement boiling down to another example of Prince Maesa’s stubborn defiance in the face of Nagash. It makes for a fun, exciting conclusion to the overall story, putting Maesa nicely back in the spotlight again and tapping into the endless possibilities of the Mortal Realms with a great sense of spectacle.
