Every so often I’ll trawl the internet to put together a roundup of all the information I can find about upcoming Black Library releases. It’s been a while since I last did one of these posts, so I thought it was about time for another – this time I’m looking at releases from the middle of November onwards, and I’ve pulled information from the Coming Soon section of the Black Library website, information provided at the Black Library Weekender (and the Warhammer Community post covering that), and elsewhere online.
To kick things off I’ve split releases out by month, but once we go past February (the majority of releases for which are confirmed on the BL site) it’s tricky to know for certain exactly when things will be released. As such I’ve broken the rest of the releases down by setting – so we’ve got Horus Heresy, 40k, Age of Sigmar and Warhammer Chronicles. Where possible I’ve included paperback editions of existing books for the sake of completion, but do bear in mind that despite my best efforts this is still not going to be an exhaustive list. For example, we still don’t know when Aaron Dembski-Bowden’s Spear of the Emperor is going to arrive!
As you’ll see very soon, there are LOTS of new releases coming our way, which is great! It does mean, however, that this article would be very, very long if I included the synopsis for every release, so I’ve included cover art where possible and then just a line or two of information about each release.
Anyway, enough rambling from me – let’s take a look at what’s coming up.
November
We’re almost halfway through November at the time of writing, but there are still a few books left to be released.
Horus Heresy Reprints
Books 1 to 5 in the Horus Heresy series will be available as print on demand hardbacks for 2 weeks only, from the 17th November (the rest have been confirmed as coming, but no dates yet). In case you need reminding, that’s:
- Horus Rising by Dan Abnett
- False Gods by Graham McNeill
- Galaxy in Flames by Ben Counter
- Flight of the Eisenstein by James Swallow
- Fulgrim by Graham McNeill
Gaunt’s Ghosts: The Victory Part One by Dan Abnett
A paperback omnibus including the first two novels in this arc – Blood Pact and Salvation’s Reach – plus four short stories.
The Beast Arises Volume 2 by Guy Haley, David Guymer, David Annandale and Gav Thorpe
A paperback omnibus collecting together books 5 to 8 in the series – Throneworld, Echoes of the Long War, The Hunt For Vulkan and The Beast Must Die.
The Warmaster by Dan Abnett in paperback
Book 14 in the Gaunt’s Ghosts series, out in paperback after last year’s hardback release. I’m assuming this will be trade paperback, not the mass market format that the older titles came in (sadly).
Kinslayer by David Guymer in audiobook
The penultimate novel in the Gotrek and Felix series, out for the first time as an audiobook – narrated by Jonathan Keeble.
December
Most of these are lifted straight from the Black Library website, but I’ve found a few other bits and pieces not currently showing up there.
Titandeath by Guy Haley
Horus Heresy book 53, this one covers the MANY Titan battles in the Beta-Garmon system, and is the penultimate book in the main-range series before the Siege of Terra starts.Hubris of Monarchia by Andy Smillie
A new Horus Heresy audio drama set before the fateful events at Calth, featuring Ultramarines battling orks.
Visions of Heresy edited by Guy Haley
A new edition of the massive Horus Heresy art and background book, updated to include new artwork and new background text (from Guy Haley). The Horus Heresy Audio Drama Collection: Volume 1 by various authors
An audio drama box set featuring seven audios – Raven’s Flight, Butcher’s Nails, Templar, Thief of Revelations, Hunter’s Moon, The Sigillite and Little Horus.
Death on the Pitch by various authors
A paperback anthology collecting together all twelve of the recent-ish (largely fantastic) Blood Bowl short stories.
The Beast Arises Volume 3 by David Annandale, David Guymer, Rob Sanders and Guy Haley
A paperback omnibus collecting together the final four books in the series – Watchers in Death, The Last Son of Dorn, Shadow of Ullanor and The Beheading.
The Uriel Ventris Chronicles: Volume 1 by Graham McNeill
The first three novels in the series – Nightbringer, Warriors of Ultramar and Dead Sky, Black Sun (plus three short stories) – collected together in a reprinted paperback omnibus.
The Tyrion and Teclis Omnibus by William King
The next Warhammer Chronicles paperback omnibus, featuring Blood of Aenarion, Sword of Caledor and Bane of Malekith.
Born of Flame by Nick Kyme in paperback
Book 50 in the Horus Heresy series, released in the large format paperback after its hardback release in June.
The Emperor’s Gift by Aaron Dembski-Bowden in paperback
Aaron’s excellent Grey Knights novel, apparently getting a paperback reprint. I found this online but haven’t seen anything else about it, so take with a small pinch of salt until we get official confirmation.
January
Once again most of these are showing up already on the BL website, while I’ve added in a few other titles to round out the month.Celestine: The Living Saint by Andy Clark
The first novel to ever focus on Saint Celestine! It’s available in limited edition hardback first, the standard edition of this doesn’t yet have a confirmed release date but I would assume a 3 to 6 month delay.
Anarch by Dan Abnett
The fifteenth Gaunt’s Ghosts novel, coming only a year (ish) after The Warmaster and closing off the fourth arc of the series.Nightfane by Nick Kyme
A new Horus Heresy audio drama, continuing the recurring adventures of Aeonid Thiel after Censure, Stratagem and Red-Marked.
Gods and Mortals by various authors
A new Age of Sigmar short story anthology featuring eighteen stories, some previously released as e-shorts and others brand new.
Warriors of the Chaos Wastes by CL Werner
Another Warhammer Chronicles paperback omnibus, this time featuring three classic CL Werner novels – Wulfrik, Blood for the Blood God and Palace of the Plague Lord.
The Complete Rafen Omnibus by James Swallow
A paperback omnibus including Swallow’s entire 40k Blood Angels series – Deus Encarmine, Deus Sanguinius, Red Fury and Black Tide, plus 5 short stories.Inferno! Volume 2
The second instalment of new Inferno!, featuring ten 40k and Age of Sigmar short stories – one of which has been available as an e-short, the other nine all brand new.
Inferno! magazine issues 6-10
Starting on the 29th Dec when Inferno! Volume 2 is released, the next five issues of the classic Inferno! magazine will be available to order as print on demand tiles.
Paperbacks of Mephiston: Revenant Crusade by Darius Hinks and Callis and Toll: The Silver Shard by Nick Horth after their hardback releases earlier in the year.
February
The final month which is currently (at the time of writing) listed on the BL website, I’ve split this out into releases which I think are due early in the month, and subsequent releases coming as part of the Black Library Celebration.
Hamilcar: Champion of the Gods by David Guymer
After previously featuring in audio dramas and short stories, Hamilcar is getting his own novel at last – and no less than he deserves (in his opinion, at least).
Corax: Lord of Shadows by Guy Haley
After its limited edition hardback release in October, the tenth Primarchs novel will be coming out in standard hardback and ebook formats.Red and Black by James Swallow
An early 40k audio drama, this is getting a re-release presumably to tie in with Our Martyred Lady coming later in the month, and maybe even the upcoming new Sisters of Battle miniatures.
Gotrek and Felix: The Second Omnibus by William King
Another Warhammer Chronicles paperback omnibus, this collects together books 4 to 6 in the ‘nounslayer’ series – William King’s Dragonslayer, Beastslayer and Vampireslayer – plus five short stories from a range of different authors.
Warhammer Adventures – Realm Quest: City of Lifestone by Tom Huddleston
The first in a new series of Age of Sigmar books for younger readers (recommended for ages 8+ I think), this is going to be available in paperback and audiobook – read by Billie Piper.
Warhammer Adventures – Warped Galaxies: Attack of the Necron by Cavan Scott
Similar to City of Lifestone, this is the first in a new 40k series for younger readers, and the audiobook version will be read by David Tennant.
Black Library Celebration
Judging by the release date for LOADS more titles, I’m assuming that the Black Library Celebration will be taking place on the 23rd Feb in 2019. Here’s what’s due out on that day, plus a few other bits and pieces:
The Buried Dagger by James Swallow
Book 54 in the Horus Heresy series, and the final main-range novel before the Siege of Terra starts, this focuses on the ‘Doom of the Death Guard’ as well as Garro and Malcador.
Angron: Slave of Nuceria by Ian St. Martin
The limited edition hardback release of the 11th Primarchs novel, this looks to take place shortly after Angron is ‘reunited’ with his Legion, so expect copious violence and the first introductions of the Butcher’s Nails.
Horus Rising by Dan Abnett and False Gods by Graham McNeill
New paperback editions of the first two Horus Heresy novels, featuring simple but effective covers, author afterwords and ‘additional’ short stories – whether those are brand new stories or reprints remains to be seen.
Honourbound by Rachel Harrison
The first Severina Raine novel, after several short stories – Execution, A Company of Shadows and The Darkling Hours (available in the 2018/19 Events Anthology). This is also Rachel Harrison’s debut novel! Our Martyred Lady by Gav Thorpe
A four-part 40k audio drama box set in a similar vein to Realmslayer, this time featuring Catherine Tate as Inquisitor Greyfax who, along with Saint Celestine, must prevent a new War of Faith.
Readers’ Choice winners
After the reader vote earlier in the year, Storm of Iron by Graham McNeill and City of the Damned by David Guymer are getting new paperback editions.
Black Library Celebration 2019 anthology
A free short story anthology available as part of the Celebration, according to the Weekender panel this is Death Guard themed, but not exclusively. Last year’s anthology featured several stories previously available in e-short.
Paperbacks
There are also plenty of new paperback editions due, including:
- Blood of Iax by Robbie MacNiven
- Ciaphas Cain: Choose Your Enemies by Sandy Mitchell
- The Lords of Silence by Chris Wraight
- Slaves to Darkness by John French
- The Tainted Heart by CL Werner
March and onwards
So that’s everything listed on the Black Library website, which means the rest of the titles coming up have either been confirmed at the Weekender or are listed somewhere online. My gut feeling is that we’re looking at titles due for release up to maybe August or thereabouts, although I would expect more brand new titles to show up over time as well. For a small handful of the following titles I’ve pulled information from a non-English Amazon site, so bear in mind these are likely to be iffy translations!
Inferno! Volume 3 by various authors
I would expect this to show up in late March/early April – from what I can see online it’s going to include a Horusian Wars story by John French, the third At the Sign of the Brazen Claw tale from Guy Haley and a Blood Bowl story by Graeme Lyon, plus stories from eight other authors.
Inferno! magazine issues 11-15
As with the release of the second volume, when Inferno! Volume 3 lands I would expect the next five issues of classic Inferno! to be made available by print on demand.
Warhammer Horror
This new range of books is due to start in March and then continue indefinitely (as far as I’m aware), and from what I heard at the Weekender these books are all due out in paperback.
Maledictions by various authors
A short story anthology billed as ‘Warhammer Horror’s answer to Inferno!’ and featuring stories by new and existing BL authors (including a couple of BL debuts). It’s going to feature both 40k and Age of Sigmar stories.
The Wicked and the Damned by various authors
A 40k portmanteau novel featuring three interlinked stories by David Annandale, Phil Kelly and Josh Reynolds.
Perdition’s Flame by Alec Worley
Alec Worley’s first Black Library audio drama featuring ‘a disgraced Vostroyan trooper seeking redemption.’
Drachenfels by Kim Newman writing as Jack Yeovil
The whole Genevieve series is going to get reprinted with beautiful new covers, author introductions, and credited to Kim Newman for the first time (he wrote them under the pseudonym Jack Yeovil). Drachenfels is the first in the series, with the rest of the series presumably coming out over the following months:
Genevieve Undead
Beasts in Velvet
Silver Nails
Age of Sigmar
There were a couple of exciting new Age of Sigmar releases confirmed at the Weekender, and I’ve found a few other bits and pieces due for release in 2019.
Scourge of Fate by Robbie MacNiven
Robbie’s first Age of Sigmar novel, this is going to focus on the Varanguard, the chosen warriors of Archaon.
The Imprecations of Daemons by Nick Kyme
It looks like this new Age of Sigmar audio drama is going to be a Celestial Knights story (like Nick’s short story The Lightning Golem) – at the Weekender it was mentioned that it features an exorcism, so that should make for interesting listening.
Rulers of the Dead by David Annandale and Josh Reynolds
A paperback omnibus collecting together two short novels – Neferata: Mortarch of Blood and Nagash: The Undying King.
Neferata: The Dominion of Bones by David Annandale (no cover art yet)
The next book in the series after Mortarch of Blood, David has confirmed that this is a full-length novel rather than the short novel format its predecessor took.
Sign of the Grot Moon (dodgy Amazon translation) by Andy Clark (no cover art yet)
I pulled this from Amazon.de – it’s an open secret that there’s going to be a Moonclan Grots Battletome coming out soon, so I assume this is going to tie in with that release.
Paperbacks
I would expect to see paperbacks of all of 2018’s remaining Age of Sigmar novels over the first six months or so of 2019. I haven’t found mention of Soul Wars, although I’d expect that to be available, but I did find mention of the following:
Shadespire: The Mirrored City by Josh Reynolds
Blacktalon: First Mark by Andy Clark
Hallowed Knights: Black Pyramid by Josh Reynolds
Warhammer 40,000
There are LOADS of great-looking 40k books due for release, from brand new titles to a stack of omnibuses. Let’s take a look…
Cadian Honour by Justin D. Hill
The sequel to Cadia Stands, without giving any spoilers it’s safe to say that this is going to follow the survivors of the previous novel as we see what they get up to next.
Requiem Infernal by Peter Fehervari
Peter’s third 40k novel, this promises to be another dark and complex story, featuring Imperial Guard survivors and a Sister Hospitaller. Maybe not for the faint hearted, but big news for Fehervari fans.
Shadowbreaker by Steve Parker
The LONG awaited follow up to Parker’s excellent novel Deathwatch, featuring the return of Talon Squad!
Knights of Caliban: Dark Angels Omnibus by Gav Thorpe
A paperback omnibus of Dark Angels stories, including Angels of Darkness, The Purging of Kadillus, and Azrael, this should be a nice companion piece to The Legacy of Caliban.
Iron Warriors: The Complete Honsou Omnibus by Graham McNeill
Another paperback omnibus, this time collecting together all of the Honsou stories – so that’s presumably Storm of Iron, the novella Iron Warrior, and several short stories.
On Wings of Blood by various authors
An Aeronautica Imperialis paperback anthology featuring the novella Medusan Wings (Ian St. Martin writing as Matt Westbrook) and a load of short stories, most of which I think have been released elsewhere before. No mention of Double Eagle, but more on that later…
The Great Devourer Omnibus by various authors
A paperback omnibus featuring stories involving the tyranids, from authors including Guy Haley, Josh Reynolds, Braden Campbell, Joe Parrino, LJ Goulding and Nick Kyme.
Ravenor: The Omnibus by Dan Abnett
A reprint of the classic omnibus including all three Ravenor novels – Ravenor, Ravenor Returned and Ravenor Rogue.
Space Marine Conquests: Apocalypse (dodgy Amazon translation) by Josh Reynolds (no cover art yet)
I pulled this from Amazon.de, so keep an eye out for official confirmation, but it looks to be about a variety of Marine Chapters battling the Word Bearers.
Vaults of Terra: The Hollow Mountain (dodgy Amazon translation) by Chris Wraight (no cover art yet)
Another Amazon.de special, this looks to be the sequel to The Carrion Throne, so hopes are high for another great Crowl and Spinoza story.
Knights of Macragge: Sicarius (dodgy Amazon translation) by Nick Kyme (no cover art yet)
Yep, another translated title. There are a few Sicarius titles showing up online, but I think the others are all related to Nick’s previous Damnos books. This one, however, looks like it’s going to tell the story of Sicarius lost in the warp!
Paperbacks
Once again I’ve found a good few 40k paperbacks listed online, but I would assume that anything which has had a hardback release pre-November 2018 will probably see a paperback release by Summer 2019.
Dark Imperium: Plague War by Guy Haley
Rise of the Ynnari: Wild Rider by Gav Thorpe
The Horusian Wars: Incarnation by John French
Double Eagle by Dan Abnett
This has been out of print for AGES – it would be lovely if it was getting a reprint to tie in with the release of the sequel, Interceptor City!
Horus Heresy
2019 is going to be a BIG year for the Horus Heresy, I think, with the continuation of the Primarchs series and the start of the Siege of Terra. Here’s what we know about the Siege series so far:
- 8 novels, starting with The Solar War by John French.
- There will be ‘the occasional hardback novella’ as well.
- All 8 novels will be released as LE hardbacks (with extra art but no additional story content) first, before standard editions a few months later.
- The first novel will be released in 2019, with the eighth due for 2022.
- The Siege series will follow the same release formats as the rest of the Heresy series, i.e. yes everything will eventually be available in mass market paperbacks.
The Solar War by John French
This is due out in limited edition hardback in March and standard editions in May. According to John’s seminar at the Weekender it’s going to have a “ridiculous” cast list, with Sanguinius appearing as “an incidental character”.
Macragge’s Honour by Dan Abnett and Neil Roberts
It looks like the excellent Horus Heresy graphic novel is going to get a hardback re-release, although again I haven’t seen anything from BL on this so I’d advise waiting for official confirmation.
Konrad Curze: The Night Haunter by Guy Haley
This wasn’t mentioned at the Weekender or on the Community site, but it’s showing up on the internet – so treat as unconfirmed but likely, for the time being. Hopefully we’ll see confirmation soon, as well as the final cover art.
In terms of Horus Heresy paperbacks, Shattered Legions was the last to come out in mass market paperback (in October) so I would expect The Crimson King to be next. I didn’t see any info on it online so haven’t included it earlier on, but going by the recent release schedule I’d expect that to land in December. I might be WAY off, but here’s what it would look like if that schedule was followed (for MMPB):
- December: The Crimson King
- February: Tallarn
- April: Ruinstorm
- June: Old Earth
- August: The Burden of Loyalty
Warhammer Chronicles
There are plenty of old-school Warhammer books still waiting for reprints, and the Warhammer Chronicles series looks like it’s going to keep on churning out. Here’s what I’ve found info about online:
Knights of the Empire by Dan Abnett, Nik Vincent, James Wallis, Richard Williams, Josh Reynolds
I would guess this includes some or all of Riders of the Dead, Hammers of Ulric, Reiksguard and Knight of the Blazing Sun.
Warlords of Karak Eight Peaks by David Guymer and Guy Haley
This looks like it’s going to contain Skarsnik, Headtaker, the novella Thorgrim, and probably a few short stories.
Skaven Wars: The Black Plague by CL Werner
This is going to be the full trilogy by CL Werner, so that’s Dead Winter, Blighted Empire and Wolf of Sigmar.
The Orion Trilogy by Darius Hinks
This one should be the full trilogy by Darius, which contains The Vaults of Winter, Tears of Isha and The Council of Beasts.
***
So there you have it – I don’t imagine for a minute that I’ve collected together an exhaustive list of upcoming releases, but there’s certainly plenty to look forward to! None of this info is exclusive, it’s all available online to find if you can be bothered looking, but hopefully it’s useful to have all in one place.
If you’ve seen anything I’ve missed, or have any thoughts or questions, please do let me know in the comments below or on Facebook or Twitter.
Thanks Michael – useful indeed. Massive release schedule.
Lots here that I want to read, in particular The Buried Dagger, The Solar War, the start of the Warhammer Horror line and Robbie’s Age of Sigmar story. I’ve really liked his work on Space Marines so could see it translating well to a brotherhood of Chaos knights.
I also really like what they are doing with the Warhammer Chronicles line. I recently read an ebook omnibus of the Black Plague trilogy and it was absolutely fantastic. Would recommend to anyone as in the top tier of Black Library stories IMHO.
Looking forward to Spear of the Emperor going on sale …. I might be convinced to splurge on the special edition. Seeing the set online and hearing some insight about the book, it just seems like something I’m going to love.
Cheers
Hi David, I’m glad it was helpful! So much to look forward to, isn’t there?
That’s good to know about the Black Plague trilogy – I haven’t read those books, but they’re on the list 🙂
As for Spear of the Emperor, I can confirm that despite my personal annoyances with BL’s SE/LE releases, this one is really something special. It’s a genuinely impressive set, although whether it’s worth £85 is still a very personal question!
Oh man, what a time too be alive.
Indeed! 🙂
Great work Michael!
Do we know what binding the Horus Heresy penthalogy is going to be? I know BL has “recently” changed it.
Thanks Jay! Do you mean whether they’re going to have squared spines as opposed to curved? I don’t think it was discussed, but I would assume squared to match the recent releases.
Do you know if the Horus Heresy re-print is in the new binding or the old one?
I don’t know for sure, although I’ve got a feeling I heard someone from BL say they would be curved spines. Don’t hold me to that, though!
Thanks Michael!
By the way, who won the Black Library? 🙂
Cheers 🙂 I’ve no idea actually, I’d forgotten about that competition. Haven’t seen anything announced yet, but I’m sure we’ll find out eventually.
